Week 12: 'Me Designer' poster

This is the final result after putting all the pre visualisation to use. Gestalt principles involve leading lines as the red frames on each strip tells the viewer which direction their eye should go in. Also the film strip with the letter 'e' created a leading line, taking the viewers eye down the page in a diagonal fashion. It also incorporates similarity as every frame in a single film strip is identical, except for the coloured one. Also each film strip is the same, with exception to the different letters in each. The only colour other than black and white are the blue background and the red frames, these two colours were selected to contrast against each other.

Week 9: Luba Lukova

Income Gap

 Metaphor: The metaphor in this image is is that in some cases, a group can be payed less than an individual due to income gaps. Or that in the modern world more people have to make do with less resources while few people have more resources than they need.  

Gestalt Principles: The several forks in the single bit of pie creates a sense of proximity.

Golden Section: This image somewhat uses a spiral golden section as if you look at the pie clockwise it starts further out and moves further into the image. 

Consistency: The consistency is in the design of the forks in the pie, it is also with the design of the pie crust that remains consistent.

Colour: It uses a bland-ish orange for the crust and a de-saturated version of that orange for the inside of the pie.  

Composition: The composition of this image is dilatational, as all elements surround a central point (the middle of the pie)   

Say it Loud

  Metaphor: If someone tries to keep you quiet about something you should speak loudly about it anyway, probably directed at those who hold secrets about corruption who are being kept quiet. 

 Gestalt Principles: This images has a sense of continuation from the binding around the face to the mouth on the back of it. 

Golden Section: The golden section of this image would be round as all elements on the outside of this design are curved in a certain direction to create a round feel. 

Consistency: The subjects face is black, there is no shading, or anything crafty other than the eye and eyebrow drawn in white. The mouth gag is consistently white. 

Colour: The image itself only contains 3 colours. Black and white are the only colours that make up the main subject and a strong orange for the background. 

Composition: Although the entire image is centered the main parts of the image (eye and mouth) occupy two different thirds, thus the rule of thirds is at play.  

Brainwashed

 Metaphor: The media is portrayed as an old fashioned washboard, is cleaning the brain of a person. This is a pun to say that their brain is being washed using the media or that they are being brainwashed by the media.  

Gestalt Principles: There is a sense of continuation from the top of the wash board to the bottom of the head. 

Golden Section: The golden section for this image seems similar to the golden section for a text character, main part in the middle being the top of the head and the brain, the rest being a filler that the image can not make sense without. 

Consistency: All aspects of the image are black and white except for the main subject of the image, the brain. 

Colour: It's all black and white except for the brain that is a bright pink to stand out from the strong black. 

Composition: Axial, because each element in the image is organised from top to bottom, every element has its place and it all fits together in a very organised fashion. 

Week 9: Composition

Axial

 All elements in this image are either right or left of a vertical axis created by the rectangle in the middle. There is no above or bellow.

Radial

This image uses radial composition because all elements emerge from or point to a single element / position in the image.

Dilatatioonal

 This image uses the mentioned composition technique because all elements revolve around a center point in a circular fashion.

Random

This image is a random composition as no elements have any relevance to each other, there's no leading lines, they're not organised, they have no relation to each other at all. 

Grid

This image uses the grip style of composition because all elements are placed into a grid. The words create the grid and the shapes obey the boundaries of the grid. 

Transitional

This composition is transitional because the elements are evenly layered.  

Modular

This is a modular composition because each element is the same size, but it is not as consistent at the Axial or Grid Compositions. 

Bilateral

This image has a Bilateral composition because every element sits on, or sits left or right of the central element running from the top of the image to the bottom.

Books 

To begin the media themed post cards I start with ’Bo’ for Books. Gestalt principles include continuation and reification. 

Continuation is relevant where the ‘o’ and the ‘B’ meet, as viewers do not need to divert their line of sight too abruptly to see the entire symbol. Reification is relevant by the slight shadow that the symbol creates. This gives the minor illusion that the symbol are somewhat placed above the page and are therefore casting a shadow. 

Colour scheme was selected to be similar, as all colours used in this postcard is different variation of red (except for the black outline)

Games

Next is ’Ga’ for Games. Just like the first, Gestalt principles include continuation and reification. 

Continuation is relevant where the ‘a’ continues on from the stroke of the ‘G’, thus allowing viewers to continue looking in a spiral style to see both letters. Reification is relevant by the slight shadow that the symbol creates. This gives the minor illusion that the symbol are somewhat placed above the page and are therefore casting a shadow. 

Colour scheme was selected to be similar, as all colours used in this postcard is different variation of green (except for the black outline) 

Film 

Then we get to ’Fi’ for Film. Like the others, Gestalt principles include continuation and reification. 

Continuation is relevant where the ‘I’ becomes part of the top stroke of the ’F’, thus allowing the viewers to scan the symbol from top to bottom and see both letters. Reification is relevant by the slight shadow that the symbol creates. This gives the minor illusion that the symbol are somewhat placed above the page and are therefore casting a shadow. 

Colour scheme was selected to be similar, as all colours used in this postcard is different variation of 

orange (except for the black outline)

Music 

Lastly we have ’Mu’ for Music. Once again Gestalt principles include continuation and reification. 

Continuation is relevant where the ‘u’ becomes a continuation off the end of the ‘M’ thus allowing viewers to scan the symbol from top to bottom and see the entire symbol without diverting their line of sight too drastically. Reification is relevant by the slight shadow that the symbol creates. This gives the minor illusion that the symbol are somewhat placed above the page and are therefore casting a shadow. 

Colour scheme was selected to be similar, as all colours used in this postcard is different variation of blue (except for the black outline) 

A2: Postcard: step 2 Composition

Game

The first two letters of Game (Ga) were combined to create a unique symbol, where the a extends the G. This postcard uses continuation as the a spans off the G and it uses reification as the shadows behind give the illusion that the symbol is above the page.   

 Film

After a lot of playing around with the F and i this continuous design was chosen, it once again uses reification by use of shadows. It can also be grouped with the games post card as both have the symbol and a larger version of the same symbol filling in the blank space.  

 Book

The book also went through a lot of design phases, initially with an o being looped through a B, but to keep the sense of continuation, the two letters were merged. Unfortunately in this process the top half of the B somehow went grey, however this will not be relevant in the coloured version. Once again, shadow beneath = reification.  

 Music

The music symbol was one of the only ones that didn't change from its initial design, with the u extending the right side of the M. Once again continuation is used and the shadow creates reification. It is also worth noting that in every post card design there is a straight line in regards to the larger symbol.  

A2: Postcard: step 1 Brainstorm

 After brainstorming some interests I decided to go with the media theme, using the first two letters of fur different media types (Film, Games, Books and Music) for the design of the postcards.  

Week 6: Analyzing Colour

Primary

This image of a small bunch of flowers that are colored Red, Yellow and Blue the primary colors that can not be made with any other color. As a result the flowers contrast nicely against each other and the background. 

Secondary    

This photo contains the secondary colors Violet, Orange and Green, the secondary colors that are each made through an even combination between the primary colors. This creates a softer contrast within the image. 

Tertiary   

This photo contains Tertiary colors, which are basically a secondary color with more of one primary color added. or, what you find between a primary color and a secondary color on the color wheel. For instance, this image contains aqua (2 Blue, 1 Yellow, between Blue and Green) and light orange (2 yellow, 1 Red, Between yellow and Orange). As a result this image is very colorful and diverse in which colors are used. 

 Analogous

 Analogues is using a color scheme that progressively makes it's way around the color wheel.For instance, in this image, all the colors are close to the red - yellow parts of the color wheel. Ranging from Red to Yellow leaves the viewer with several shades of orange in between the two primary colors.  

Complementary

 Complementary colors are colors that are at opposite ends of the color wheel. For instance, Red and Green are complementary together. Complementary colors often make each other stand out more, or if one is dominant, it makes the other stand out more. For instance in this image, green is the dominant color in the image, but because Red and Green are complementary colors, the red flowers stick out better,

Similarity

This drawing shows similarity between each hand as both hands look the same, both are holding pencils and are drawn in the same way. 

Continuation 

This image uses continuation by the way that both hands loop around on each other leading the viewer to look in a loop, from one hand to the other.   

Ascending

 Continuation

Just like 'hands' this image uses continuation in a way that infinitely loops. The stairs seem to always be going up or down depending on which way your eyes take you. As a result the viewer looks around this image over and over. 

Proximity

Each individual step as well as each person walking up / down the infinite stairs has a close proximity with itself. Particularly for the steps, this makes the stairs all one ongoing object. 

Swan

Continuation

The infinity shape that the black / white swans are moving in leads the viewer to follow them around over and over again. 

Proximity

The consistency of space between each swan has them all within close proximity to one another. 

Figure and Ground

THe figure and ground is used in the center of the image where the stream of white swans and the stream of black swans overlap. The white swans are positioned in a way that the black swans in the background fit perfectly into the gaps.
